To say that the Joker’s origin is concrete is like saying the Riddler is only mildly fascinated with complex enigmas. That bucket of smiling fish just won’t hold water. Throughout the character’s nearly eighty-year history, even the most fan-accepted backstory to the Clown Prince of Crime is itself in doubt of being true due to the Joker’s flippant relationship with the truth. Now another fold to the grinning rogue’s past has been added with the release of the latest trailer for Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker’. A number of details were revealed that seemed to contradict what little we thought we knew about the character.

To put fans’ minds at ease, comic book legend and current CCO of DC Comics Jim Lee took to Instagram with his thoughts on Joaquin Phoenix’s version of the Joker. Though Lee does emphasize this new big-screen adaptation is not strapped down by the lore of DC comics, he also ensures comic book fans that the core of the character is in sync with who we’ve come to know over the years. Lee dove into the experience saying:

“Director Todd Phillip’s [‘Joker’] is intense, raw and soulful. He’s talked about how his take on the Joker is not beholden to the character’s comic book roots. That said, there’s absolutely nothing in this film incongruous with our understanding of who the Joker is. If anything, Joaquin Phoenix’s mesmerizing and unsettling turn as the Joker gives us a deep and fully realized look into one of our favorite villains, and I’m sure elements will be embraced going forward in our ongoing, ever evolving mythology. That’s what powerful, compelling stories do. And without a doubt—long time DC fans will be spending a lot of time unpacking the many story revelations and questions this harrowing cautionary tale raises.”

In no shortage of words, Jim Lee does his best to sell and quell all in one post. To be honest, the eight-minute standing ovation the film received at the Venice Film Festival already cemented its legitimacy as a must-see alone. Arthur Fleck and his transition into one of the most well-known supervillains in pop culture must be doing something right.

‘Joker’ will be laughing his way into theatres nationwide on October 4th.
