Hulu is in the early stages of planning their eventual and inevitable post-Handmaid’s Tale future, as they begin discussions with showrunner Bruce Miller to develop a sequel series based on Margaret Atwood’s upcoming sequel novel ‘The Testaments’.

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized “return to traditional values”.

‘The Testaments’ sequel novel picks up more than fifteen years after the end of the first novel and begins with the explosive testaments of three female narrators from the Republic of Gilead. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The third is a woman who wields power through the ruthless accumulation and deployment of secrets.

“Margaret Atwood is a literary icon who continues to delight and challenge readers through her provocative and compelling prose,” commented Steve Stark, President of Television Production at MGM, who make the series for Hulu. “She has been an incredible creative partner and resource to MGM throughout the production of Handmaid’s and we look forward to working with her on the story’s exciting next chapter.”

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, which has already been renewed for a 4th season, was an instant hit for the US streaming service. Over its three seasons, it has picked up armfuls of awards including Emmys, Golden Globes, a Peabody Award, and an AFI award. Whilst Hulu has yet to announce an end to the series, it would seem they are at least planning for the eventuality when it does arise.

Margaret Atwood’s sequel novel, ‘The Testaments’, is released on 10th September 2019, if you want to go a copy.
