Netflix has set an October premiere date and released some “first look” images for the upcoming sci-fi drama ‘Raising Dion’, based on the comic book by Dennis Liu.
Raising Dion follows the story of a woman named Nicole (Alisha Wainwright – ‘Shadowhunters’), who raises her son Dion (newcomer Ja’Siah Young) after the death of her husband, Mark (Michael B. Jordan – ‘Black Panther’). The normal dramas of raising a son as a single mom are amplified when Dion starts to manifest several mysterious, superhero-like abilities. Nicole must now keep her son’s gifts secret with the help of Mark’s best friend Pat (Jason Ritter – ‘The Event’, ‘Gravity Falls’), and protect Dion from antagonists out to exploit him while figuring out the origin of his abilities.
Ja’Siah Young’s Dion Reese is a curious, playful, and intelligent 7-year-old boy who is learning he has some very special abilities – he can move things with his mind. While exciting and cool, it’s also something he knows scares his mom, Nicole.
Alisha Wainwright’s Nicole Reese is a former professional dancer who gave it up to raise her son Dion when her husband Mark died. Although Nicole is completely overwhelmed by raising her son alone while dealing with the loss of her husband, she is still effortlessly cool and maintains a positive outlook on life for Dion. As Dion’s abilities become more and more apparent, Nicole’s protective nature heightens as she starts to fear for his safety.
Jason Ritter’s Pat is a geeky comic-book-reading scientist who worked with Mark and was his best friend. After Mark dies, he makes every effort to be there for Nicole and Dion, and loves them like family. Pat is smart, cute, successful, and has a special bond with Dion.
The ten-episode, hourlong, drama is the brainchild of commercial and music video director Dennis Liu, who created the comic book and directed the short film, which became a viral hit. Carol Barbee (‘UnREAL’, ‘Jericho’, ‘Touch’), serves as showrunner/executive producer on the series and wrote the script for episode one. Joining them as executive producers are Michael B. Jordan through his Outlier Society Productions, Michael Green (‘American Gods’, ‘Logan’), Charles D. King, and Kenny Goodman. Seith Mann (‘The Wire’, ‘Homeland’) directed the pilot and also serves as an executive producer.
‘Raising Dion‘ Season 1 premieres Friday, 4th October 2019 on Netflix UK and around the world.
